MiscellanySoprano Leontyne Price, conductor James Levine, composer Carlisle Floyd and administrator Richard Gaddes will be the initial recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors.

N.E.A. to Honor Opera
Opera NewsThe United States government is honoring opera. The National Endowment for the Arts said on Tuesday that it was establishing yearly Opera Honors awards, and named the first four recipients: James Levine, the Metropolitan Opera’s music director; the soprano Leontyne Price; the composer Carlisle Floyd; and Richard Gaddes, the general director of the Santa Fe Opera.

Opera NewsWith the volatile mix of race, religion and politics stirred up in the presidential primaries, the new opera introduced Saturday by Lyric Opera of Kansas City is unexpectedly au courant.

Exploring the run-up to the Civil War, Kansas-born composer Kirke Mechem's John Brown is peopled by Frederick Douglass and Lt. J.E.B. Stuart as well as the eponymous and still-controversial abolitionist. With some compression and dramatic license, the opera spans a period from December 1855 to December 1859.

Opera NewsIf you had to pick a pair of musical genres furthest apart from each other, opera and hip hop would be a fairly safe bet. One thing they do share is sizable purist fan bases, which, whether they use the phrase or not, prefer practitioners to keep it real. Nonetheless, these star-crossed genres are coming together in a performance called The Hip Hopera, a new collaboration by the Canadian Opera Company and the Royal Conservatory of Music.
