Musicians press Congress for more funding for arts
MiscellanyMusicians Josh Groban, Wynton Marsalis, and Linda Ronstadt pressed Congress yesterday for more public funding for the arts to help sustain programs during the nation's economic slump.

Marsalis said it's critical for the nation to reevaluate its priorities during the financial crisis to ensure the best aspects of US culture aren't lost to younger generations because of scarce funding. But it's also fair to say that Babbitt didn't consider getting audience members to tap their feet to be an artist's highest calling.

The Master Chorale of Washington Will Cease Operations in May
MiscellanyThe Master Chorale of Washington, one of the city's largest choruses, announced yesterday that it will cease operations in May.

In a statement, the chairman of the chorus's board, Virginia Austin Schubert, said that the economic downturn had claimed a substantial portion of the chorus's investments -- necessary financial reserves, given that ticket sales and contributions had failed to cover the group's operating expenses for the past three years.
