| The Original Bess, Anne Brown |
Anne Brown, a penetratingly pure soprano who literally put the Bess in “Porgy and Bess” by inspiring George Gershwin to expand that character’s part in a folk opera that originally was to be called “Porgy,” died Friday in Oslo. She was 96. |

| Opera Stars Revive a Neglected Work |
Kurt Weill’s operetta “The Firebrand of Florence” was doomed by an inadequate cast and a lackluster staging when it opened on Broadway in March 1945. It closed a month later and (except for a few songs) was neglected until a decade or so ago. A lively semistaged performance at Alice Tully Hall on Thursday revealed both the intricacies of Weill’s vibrant score and the libretto’s comedic elements, aptly framed by Roger Rees’s narration and direction. |

| When is an opera not an opera? |
Every season, Commonwealth Opera of Western Massachusetts stages an opera and a musical—the former because that's where their heart and history are, the latter for fun, variety and ticket sales. But this year the company's spring production, which plays this weekend in Northampton, is neither.
Despite its title, The Threepenny Opera isn't even a mini-opera. It's an almost unique piece of musical theater. A success de scandale when it premiered in Weimar Berlin in 1928, it upended the conventions of the musical stage, which at the time was occupied, on both sides of the Atlantic, with sentimental operettas and jaunty boy-meets-girl entertainments. And it made the careers of its young authors, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. |

| Connecticut Opera closes down, citing bad economy |
The Connecticut Opera has gone out of business after 67 seasons, the latest arts group to fall victim to the economic downturn and sagging charitable donations.
Opera board President Brooks Joslin said Thursday the decision to shut down was made late last week. The opera's bank account was frozen and funding sources had dried up following a poor turnout at the November production of "Don Giovanni" at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. |
