Sydney Opera House
Sydney gives thanks to Opera House architect Joern Utzon

The sun had just slipped above the horizon to kiss the Opera House sails when the people of Sydney stirred to give thanks to Joern Utzon, who had given them the sail.

To the sound of didgeridoos and clapsticks, the great architect's children, Jan and Lin, descended the monumental stairs with 12 dancers of the Jannawin Dance Theatre for the traditional welcome-to-country smoking ceremony.

The first Australians once had a shell midden in this place. Now, perhaps 40,000 years later, their descendants were opening the state memorial for Mr Utzon, who died in Copenhagen last November, aged 90.

Later in the concert hall, a state memorial will include performances, readings and recollections from the Sydney Symphony, Opera Australia, the Australian Ballet and Sydney Theatre Company.

John Bell, of The Bell Shakespeare Company, and actress Cate Blanchett, from the Sydney Theatre Company, will read; Neil Finn will sing; NSW Premier Nathan Rees and federal Arts Minister Peter Garrett will speak.

On the podium level of the Opera House steps, Jan kept in step with the women and girl dancers of the Dharug people; Lin brushed a tear from a cheek.

The Aborigines gave the Utzons a shell painted with ochre, a message stick painted with a star representing their father, a piece of petrified flint about 150 million years old from Utzon's desk in Denmark and a little canoe carved from whale bone and seal skin that Inuit fathers made for their sons.

Lin said: "My father would have been so delighted, so interested, so grateful.

"My heart opened up when I heard the music and saw the dancers. My father would have been overly joyed to know how much the people love and appreciate his building."

Jan said the Opera House was his father's most important work and a celebration of life.

"Australians have given him so much love and affection," he said.

"His heart was here."

His father's last 10 years had been spent thinking about and planning the future of the Opera House. Even if it had not been built to original plans, it would have had to be upgraded by now, Jan said.

Of the proposed $1 billion upgrade, Jan said: "Plans to bring the Opera Theatre to international standards now lie in a drawer."

Mr Rees would not be drawn on the plans; nor would Mr Garrett.
