New appointments at NYCO
Opera NewsGeorge Steel Appoints Edward Yim, Steven Blier to Posts in NYCO's Artistic Administration -
Music Director George Manahan and Director of Music Administration Kevin Murphy to Remain in Current Roles with Troubled Company
February 23, 2009

George Steel, New York City Opera's recently appointed general manager and artistic director, announced today the appointments of several new administrators to oversee the embattled company's artistic efforts, with Edward Yim set to join City Opera as its new director of artistic planning, and Steven Blier slated to become its new casting advisor.

In addition, a press release issued by City Opera confirmed that its current music director, George Manahan, as well as its director of music administration, Kevin Murphy, would remain in their current roles with the company.

"City Opera has pledged to carry its great, popular tradition of innovation and discovery into a new era," said Steel, who was appointed to lead the company in January following the fallout from Gerard Mortier's abandoned bid to helm City Opera after he disagreement with the company's board over key budgetary issues/ "With this wonderfully talented artistic team in place, we are clearly on the way toward making good on our promise."

Yim joins the company following a tenure at IMG Artists North America, where he oversaw a roster of conductors, composers and instrumentalists; he managed the company's conductors and instrumentalists division in New York. From 2000 until 2006, he served as director of artistic planning with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he supervised programming for concerts in both the Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as the Hollywood Bowl. Yim has also worked for the Cleveland Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Blier, a respected pianist and vocal coach, serves as artistic director and co-founder of the New York Festival of Song. In recital, he has accompanied singers that have included Renée Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Samuel Ramey, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Susan Graham, Frederica von Stade, José van Dam and Arleen Augér. Blier also serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School.
