Scottish Opera Reveals New Five:15 Collaborators
Scottish Opera is delighted to reveal the new crop of opera-makers who will create a brand-new set of original short operas for the company’s innovative project, Five:15 Operas Made in Scotland.
Tickets for the production, which opens in February 2009, go on sale tomorrow (WED). With an exciting line-up of Scottish-based creative talent on board, Five:15 looks certain to repeat the overwhelming success of last year, which saw the entire run sell out well in advance.
The teams are: director Nicholas Bone and composer David Fennessy; playwright Zinnie Harris and Edinburgh- based composer John Harris; Glasgow writer/GP Dr Margaret McCartney and returning composer Gareth Williams; Herald writer Amy Parker and composer/lecturer Dr Martin Dixon; novelist Louise Welsh and composer Stuart MacRae. The operas will explore a variety of subject matters, themes, styles and music.
Five:15 is Scottish Opera’s five year research and development project to find the next generation of opera composers, writers and directors with the ultimate aim of developing a new full-length opera. Critics and audiences alike have praised Scottish Opera for both its boldness in creating Five:15 and the quality of work produced.
‘I came away from Five:15 thrilled, stimulated and, yes, moved’, Financial Times. ‘Ingenious’, The Herald.
Scottish Opera’s Derek Clark will conduct players from the Scottish Opera Orchestra in performance, with Michael McCarthy returning as dramaturg, Frederic Wake-Walker as director and Andrew Storer as designer.
Scottish Opera General Director Alex Reedijk said: “I am delighted by the creative interest that has been unleashed by Five:15 in 2008. In selecting these five new pieces we have been spoilt for choice and I’m very happy that we have five pairings of writers and composers who have the talent to make really interesting opera.”
Five:15is again sponsored by management and technology consultancy firm Accenture - which shares Scottish Opera’s passion for innovation. Accenture is Scottish Opera’s Sponsor and Consulting Partner. Major support has been received from The Binks Trust and The Scottish Opera Endowment Trust along with in-kind support from Òran Mór.
Trevor Hatton, Managing Director of Accenture Scotland, said: “Accenture Scotland is delighted to sponsor the next set of Five:15 operas. Our relationship with Scottish Opera, both as a sponsor and consulting partner, is going from strength to strength and we are proud to be associated with this pioneering project which enjoyed such huge success last year.
Accenture is dedicated to the delivery of high performance and we have committed our skills and expertise to help Scottish Opera deliver excellence both on and off the stage. We are looking forward to continuing our strong collaboration this year.”
