Repairs needed for Sydney Opera House
Opera NewsTWENTY minutes into opening night of Janacek's The Makropulos Secret, the stage and orchestra pit plunged into darkness. Technical problems have also forced a restart for a scene in Handel's Rinaldo, and there was a lift malfunction which threatened a performance of Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges.

In Santa Fe, Concepts Without Connections
Opera NewsWhen John Crosby founded the summer opera company here in 1957, he came up into the hills north of town and fired a gun to find a setting with the perfect acoustics and the right echo.

Shots were fired again Saturday night, opening the world premiere of the opera "The Letter." But they sounded a little flimsy, as if fired from a cap gun. The opera could have offered a lot more bang for the buck.

As Manhattan Bus Rolls, Driver Polishes His Pavarotti
MiscellanyOne famous aria after another: the operatic hit parade began as the bus pulled away from the depot, empty. “La donna è mobile” from Verdi’s “Rigoletto” was followed, somewhere on the West Side Highway, by “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s “Turandot.”

Musicians press Congress for more funding for arts
MiscellanyMusicians Josh Groban, Wynton Marsalis, and Linda Ronstadt pressed Congress yesterday for more public funding for the arts to help sustain programs during the nation's economic slump.

Marsalis said it's critical for the nation to reevaluate its priorities during the financial crisis to ensure the best aspects of US culture aren't lost to younger generations because of scarce funding. The acclaimed trumpet player said he learned key lessons about jazz when he was young by playing with some of the original members of Duke Ellington's band.

Sydney Opera House
The sun had just slipped above the horizon to kiss the Opera House sails when the people of Sydney stirred to give thanks to Joern Utzon, who had given them the sail.

To the sound of didgeridoos and clapsticks, the great architect's children, Jan and Lin, descended the monumental stairs with 12 dancers of the Jannawin Dance Theatre for the traditional welcome-to-country smoking ceremony.
